On May 26th, Jupiter changes signs from Taurus to Gemini. As one would expect, the largest planet in our solar system carries a large wave of energy bringing expansion and magnification to whatever it touches. This change from an earth to an air sign will surely be noticeable to most of us (and even more so if Jupiter is one of your ruling planets). Let’s explore what the significance of this transition holds and what we can do to utilize its energies for our highest good.
Jupiter spends approximately 12 months in each sign, taking a full 12 years to circulate through all of the zodiac. As such, each of us experiences a “Jupiter return” every 12 years. If you were born with Jupiter-in-Gemini, this is your year! Even if your natal Jupiter is in a different sign, this transiting energy still impacts you and offers opportunities for growth and upgrades.
This particular transit of Jupiter’s also holds significance due to this planet’s natural rulership of Sagittarius. With Gemini being opposite of Sagittarius, we find Jupiter in the opposite position of its natural state. Many people consider the term “opposition” to mean contrary or contradicting; however, in astrology, those words better describe the square aspect. Oppositions in astrology deal a lot with balance and most often those calls for balance are manifested via relationships. We could then say that oppositions hold a kind of mirroring or reflective dynamic, bringing two polarized approaches head-to-head so they can be integrated.
This, however, does not imply that those differing approaches are totally contrary to one another. Not so. The polarity of the signs in astrology bring us differences as well as similarities, and it is through those similarities where a balance can be struck. Since Jupiter rules Sagittarius, it holds qualities that are similar to this sign – optimism, desire for expansion and freedom, higher wisdom, exploration, and joie de vivre. Astrological interpretations of Jupiter often involve discussions of opportunity, good luck, grace and expansion. Those interpretations are accurate and certainly can offer some relief and excitement, especially when other factors in the chart are showing heavier dynamics.
However, I feel it is often overlooked that Jupiter’s primary role is one of teacher. In Vedic astrology, it is known as “Guru.” Even with a western approach, this name holds resonance as Jupiter is associated with higher learning, religion and cosmology. Therefore, this planet is one of our greatest teachers and through its guidance, we can gain not only better understanding, but wisdom.
Which brings me to what kind of teachings we can expect to unfold as Jupiter transits through its opposite sign of Gemini. Where these two signs share similarities are in their love of learning and teaching. Both Gemini and Sagittarius have strong intellect and enthusiasm. They are both fun-loving, congenial and lighthearted signs. Being air and fire elements respectively, they encourage one another, so this is not an uncomfortable transit for Jupiter, per say.
Yet, as mentioned before, there are also differences. We could say the primary difference between Gemini and Sagittarius is one of perspective. Gemini, being ruled by Mercury, is highly cerebral and observant. It is an incredibly fast-paced sign, moving with the fluidity of air. Gemini wants to gather information and make connections between various parts. It’s ability for reason and argument allows it to detach emotionally from its perceptions in order to make accurate hypotheses. Conversely, Sagittarius is linked to Jupiter through its desire for expansion, and thus wants to move beyond the mundane, catalogued and intellectually-accepted paradigms into something more all-encompassing. We could say Gemini is concerned with fact while Sagittarius is concerned with truth.
One of the inherent characteristics of the “Sagittarian journey” is the cultivation of wisdom through intuition. For example, those who have Pluto in Sagittarius, the 9th house or in aspect with Jupiter, often find their life’s journey underscored by confrontation through belief systems. They encounter people in their lives who will challenge their viewpoints and authority. These confrontations are necessary because part of the Sagittarian path requires one to adopt universal truth – which means accepting that truth is relative to the individual and that “all paths lead to Rome.” Until the Sagittarian learns to humble themselves and acknowledge that they don’t know everything, they will continue to experience intellectual confrontation, often from those in academia or other mainstream avenues of rational and scholarly thought. The necessity of this conflict is to enforce in the Sagittarian their sense of intuition, which precedes the rational mind.
Why am I delving so deep into Sagittarius right now? Because Jupiter holds these same dynamics and wherever it transits, these themes of higher learning and wisdom come to the fore. With this planet transiting through Gemini, issues of reason, rationale, intellect and perception are highlighted. I mentioned before that Jupiter expands and magnifies whatever it touches. This is how it brings us good luck and opportunity, but it is also how it teaches us – by expanding areas of ourselves and our lives that have previously gone unnoticed. With its transit through Gemini, those areas are going to involve our communication and perception.
I also want to add a little note about Gemini’s ruler, Mercury, that you may or may not recognize. Mercury is the planet of our thinking and communication, as we know, and through its rulership of Virgo (an earth sign), it also governs craftsmanship. So we have Mercury ruling through air and earth. In Gemini Mercury conjures and connects with ideas and inspiration. Through Virgo, it takes those ideas and manifests them into physical form, seeking to hone and perfect them. Thus, Mercury is the planet which governs our ability to manifest in physical creation.
This is really no surprise. Most of us are aware that our thoughts create our reality, at least in an abstract or theoretical way. However, we’re often so busy and caught up in the linear time stream that we fail to see this universal law in action. Of course, many of us have practiced active manifestation and experienced the joy of witnessing our intentions brought to life. Yet, so often we default into our well-honed neural pathways that we fail to recognize when our thoughts are manifesting less-than-pleasant circumstances in our lives. It’s one thing to smile proudly at the business you’ve manifested, but quite another to realize those enraged customers confronting you on a regular basis are your own manifestation as well.
As Jupiter transits through Gemini, we are going to be confronted with those neural pathways. Our thoughts and perceptions may become highlighted for us and we may recognize how limiting they actually are. It’s fascinating how stuck we get on certain ideas, things we totally take for granted. This is the path of Gemini, to label and categorize things once you’ve learned them. It’s a very useful tool and is necessary to survive in the 3D. However, our universe (and therefore, our world) is constantly changing. There may be certain labels we’ve ascribed in the past that no longer hold truth. Through Jupiter, we may face the confrontation between our observed past experience and our innate wisdom.
As mentioned before, intuition precedes intellect. It also doesn’t follow the same rigid, linear rules. In fact, higher truth and wisdom is characteristically filled with contradiction and paradox and devoid of logic and reason. It requires transcendence of the rational mind in order to fully comprehend – and that comprehension doesn’t come through the mind; it comes through the heart. We’re talking about the difference between thinking and knowing. It also requires a great deal of faith (another aspect of Jupiter’s influence). If you are going to contradict the mainstream accepted narrative or worldly paradigms, you’ll need faith in order to ground in your truth within the face of egoic backlash.
I have to laugh because as Jupiter is crossing that 29th degree of Taurus now, and thus bridging together the themes of Taurus and Gemini, I’ve already witnessed this principle in action. If you happened to catch the recent Joe Rogan podcast interview with actor Terrence Howard, you may have witnessed it too. I only caught a few minutes of the interview, but found myself totally taken aback by Howard’s depth of knowledge and information he shared. Not only is he extremely intelligent and well spoken (Gemini), but he is spiritually awake. In the interview Howard mentioned he’s written a book. I went to his website and pulled up the book which is titled, “One Times One Equals Two.”
Here is an excerpt from the first page:
“Allow me to enlighten you. If 4/2 is the inverse of 2 x 2 = 4, then it would naturally follow that 2/1 is the inverse operation of 1 x 1 = 2. What does your common sense tell you about these two scenarios? What do they have in common and what are their differences? … The only difference exists in dimension alone. If they ADD, SUBTRACT and DIVIDE according to the same ratio then they must also MULTIPLY according to the same ratio, plain and simple! … Yet, the Math and Scientific community tells us that common sense and logic are wrong in this case because of a product of an arbitrary convention called the Identity property.”
This is such a fantastic example of Jupiter at work in Gemini. Howard’s book highlights a widely and long-time accepted “fact” of the mainstream and how it is filled with fallacy. He is questioning an idea we have always accepted. He is also taking that question and expanding it into a theory of a unified cosmology! He mentioned in the interview trying to share this new cosmology with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who became quite upset by Howard’s proposed theories and went on the attack, ultimately refusing to speak to Howard.
On a personal note, many years ago I read a brief article about Terrence Howard during the height of his career (around the time he starred in Crash). Something Howard was quoted saying in the article gave me the impression he was a judgmental and snobby person. It turned me off to him and since then, I have not really looked at any of his work. A perfect example of how we can adopt an idea and “assign a label” to something, only to realize later we were incorrect in our assumptions.
It’s been 12 years since Jupiter was last in Gemini. That’s quite a bit of time that we’ve been living with the same adopted belief systems and world views. We all have obviously changed and grown in that time, but perhaps have not yet recognized how outdated some of our thought patterns are and especially how they undermine our true potential. The world itself is changing, so our past experiences are no longer a good barometer for our future potential. What we have observed in the past may no longer be true, whether that’s in general or specific to ourselves.
Jupiter is teaching us about the power of our perceptions as it transits through Gemini. It is highlighting for us the good, the bad and everything in between. Through this transit, we can better understand how we have limited our potential and can deepen our connection with the Infinite, which resides in each and every one of us. The mechanism of this process may manifest as a juxtaposition of intellect to intuition. We may begin to receive stronger “hunches” or insights that seemingly contradict what we have always known. I want to add here that Gemini does not only correlate to the themes of mainstream academia or highbrow elitism (in fact, Sagittarius can also correlate to those themes). It represents thinking in and of itself as well as how we communicate those thoughts, whether that’s with other people or the “communication” which occurs between aerial thought and physical manifestation.
Since Jupiter tends to expand the energies of the sign it’s in, we can expect a heightening of Gemini energy. Each sign has a range of potential expressions and we are certain to see the demonstration of that range throughout this transit. We may feel busier than normal. There may be a tendency towards chatter, including mind chatter. We may leap to conclusions before fully vetting the information we’ve received. We may feel a desire to share information with others. This latter point can be a good thing, but I also want to point out that Gemini is associated with gossip. Mercury rules local movement and so we may find ourselves desiring to move more. We may also be filled with nervous energy coursing through our bodies. This is a common characteristic of Gemini as the mental frenzy circulates through our bodies impacting our nervous system and often influencing our sleep patterns.
Lastly, one of Gemini’s most nefarious lower expressions is the notion of comparison. The mechanism through which Gemini learns is via comparison and contrast. This is why Gemini is often associated with duality. While not a bad thing in and of itself, it becomes harmful when we attach ourselves to these comparisons and assign value to them. “Column A is better than Column B, and I happen to be in Column B…” As such, our tendencies toward comparison with others may become further highlighted. If you happen to have Chiron-in-Gemini like I do, this pernicious weed is sure to be a focal point of your experience with this transit, especially when Jupiter comes into conjunction with your natal placement.
Recall, Jupiter is “Guru,” our teacher. So whatever it highlights for us during this transit, it is doing so because it wants us to focus our attention. Jupiter is compelling us to expand beyond intellect and step into wisdom. In order to do this, we must recognize where we are expressing the lower potentials of Gemini so we can embrace its higher expressions.
What would the higher expressions of Gemini look like? Gemini’s beautiful sense of curiosity and acumen for detached observation are good qualities to embrace. By observing ourselves – and in particular, our thought patterns – with curiosity free from judgment and attachment, we can learn more about ourselves in order to shift into better alignment. We are also going to be challenged through this transit to really drop into our heart space. There is going to be a lot of ideas swirling around, both in our own heads and in the collective conversations. Our brains are wonderful tools we can utilize for creation, but we must always remember to default to the wisdom of our hearts.
It is also recommended we make a conscious effort to slow down and be silent whenever possible. If you have your North Node in Gemini, you may be aware that one of your key life lessons is to learn true listening. It is a common characteristic of Gemini to jump to conclusions before having all the necessary information. If you know anyone with strong Gemini energy, you may have experienced this in dialogue with them. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve spoken to a Gemini, only to have them cut me off mid-sentence as they assume to know “where I’m going with this.” Their mind moves so quickly, they’ve already jumped to the conclusion of my point as well as around the world and back again in the time it takes me to speak half a sentence. However, it is often the case that they are wrong in their assumptions. When they slow down to really listen to the point that is being made, not only does the speaker feel truly heard, but the listener learns something new.
Speaking of listening, within its higher expressions this transit offers us a wonderful opportunity for sharing ideas with others. Gemini is friendly, funny and outgoing, so we may find it easier to connect with like-minded people. Thus, our sense of community may be enhanced. Through these alliances, we can perhaps manifest greater things than we are capable of on our own.
Gemini can be very impatient due to this fast-paced energy. People who speak or move slower by nature can become very frustrating. Once again, Jupiter is likely to highlight this frustration if it’s something that doesn’t serve our highest good. This is why we must exercise patience, deep listening and heart-centered feeling in order to balance the frenetic mental energy of Gemini. Through these observations, we are going to be compelled to do some much-needed releasing. We are being confronted with all the Gemini dynamics in our lives that no longer serve us, and so we must let them go. That may involve, as I’ve mentioned, our perceptions; it may also involve the way we speak and express ourselves, the people we spend time with, those we have considered our teachers, and the communities we’ve attached ourselves to. Anything that is limiting our potential for expansion and greater wisdom, we must surrender during this transit.
A final point I want to make about Jupiter-in-Gemini is we are also being afforded new tools for deep healing and shadow work through this transit. This comes through Jupiter’s sextile aspect to Chiron-in-Aries. Sextiles are considered harmonious aspects, but they are not as “chill” as trines. They facilitate excited agitation and bring new information which compels us into action. Thus, through Jupiter’s expansion of Gemini energy, through our observations and curiosities, we may be led to new insights and epiphanies that can liberate our self-healing processes.
Recall that Chiron is considered a co-ruler of Sagittarius along with Jupiter. It utilizes different, often painful, teaching processes, but equally leads us into deeper wisdom and expanded understanding. “The wound is the medicine” with Chiron, and so we may begin to recognize fresh avenues for healing as we move through this transit. Jupiter will first come into exact aspect with Chiron in late September of this year. Through their respective retrograde periods, the two planets will shift away from each other for a length of time. They will be reunited once again in mid-May, 2025, shortly before Jupiter changes signs once again.
I have no doubt Jupiter will lead you to the most optimal expressions of Gemini. It is sure to offer you new, rewarding opportunities for expansion and experiences filled with grace and wisdom. While this transit may underscore for us some annoying, but necessary mental shifts we require, it is also sure to lead us into greater understanding of ourselves and our reality. May it broaden your perception of what’s possible. May it deepen your confidence in your intuition. May it lead you to greater truth and wisdom. May it connect you to others through heartfelt listening, sharing and communion. And may it fill you with fresh ideas and inspiration.
Enough with the letting go 🫣🥹. And it’s my 8house
Very true on Gemini characteristics. My oldest daughter and aunt. 😬❤️
