After being stationed at 21 degrees, Jupiter moves into its official retrograde cycle through Gemini on the 8th of October. From here, it will backtrack all the way to 11 degrees of Gemini until it moves direct again on February 3rd, 2025. Since Jupiter changes signs once per year, its retrograde cycles tend to bring more conscious reflection and emphasis than the other outer planets. What will this particular retrograde cycle through the sign of the Twins bring us?
First, let’s remind ourselves of the archetypes with which we’re dealing. Jupiter naturally rules Sagittarius and deals with expansion, magnification and the principles of grace and faith. It is also the master teacher, the guru. Gemini is the sign of duality and polarity and it deals primarily with the mind and communication. The underlying drive of Gemini is to compare and contrast the information it collects in order to gain better understanding. Gemini wants to learn and it is also an archetype of the teacher.
As we know, all archetypes hold higher and lower expressions. For Gemini, its lower expression involves becoming consumed by comparison and overattachment to the mind. Being ruled by Mercury, it is an expert in analyzing details; however, in its collection of data it can become lost in those details to the point it loses sight of the larger, cohesive picture.
This is why the higher expression of Gemini involves synthesis or the ability to make seemingly contrasting ideas coherent. In its higher potential Gemini becomes a unifier of information rather than a separator and dissector. One of my favorite depictions of this archetype comes through the art of Ciro Marchetti, who shows the Twins side-by-side looking through the same mask or lens together. This symbolizes the unification of opposites or the cooperation of polarity. Gemini loses its integrity when it brings judgment or bias into its assessments of reality. The highest expression of this sign recognizes that all components of our existence belong. More than that, the polarities which exist in our reality are necessary and interdependent.
On the other side of the spectrum, as ruler of Sagittarius, Jupiter already has this zoomed out, higher perception of reality. It can see the bigger picture and recognize the greater truth that everything is cohesive and connected. However, the lower expression of the Sagittarius archetype loses its ability to ground this higher perception into our human existence because it fails to properly communicate the higher truths it perceives in ways that are understandable to everyone. Sagittarius becomes overly attached to its version of truth and perception of reality and feels the need for everyone else to conform. It then becomes dogmatic in its teaching, and in the process, actually repels its potential students.
Therefore, the higher expression of Sagittarius (and Jupiter) is the recognition that truth is relative to the observer. There is a higher truth or cosmic laws that govern our reality, but the pathways to discovering these truths are paved by each individual. As master teacher, this archetype then balances itself with its polarity – Gemini – by grounding its higher wisdom into earthly perception so that it may impart its knowledge in ways that will make sense to everyone. Rather than alienating its students in a desperate attempt to make them accept its perception, higher Jupiter plants seeds of wisdom and allows them space to grow in ways that will make sense to each individual.
What does all this have to do with Jupiter’s retrograde cycle? Through this reflective process, Jupiter is amplifying within each of us what kind of mental toxicities we have attached ourselves to. Retrogrades are an inward driven energy, so the magnification of Jupiter is turned in on ourselves and our inner worlds. Since Gemini rules the mind and perception, we are being called to reexamine our thought patterns, beliefs and mental orientations.
The mind is a tricky business because as the interface through which we learn, communicate and engage with our world, it is easy to get lost in its patterns or “coding.” The mind is habitual, so whatever we feed it, whatever we focus on, it wants to repeat and continually draw upon. It requires discipline and resolve to rewire its patterns; otherwise, we get stuck running the same mental loops on repeat.
Since our mind is one of the tools we use for manifestation – the electrical pulse we emit to create thoughtforms – whatever kind of mental patterns we dig grooves into are what we continually create in our experience. However, these mental loops are rooted in past experiences, created from an impulse to avoid repeating past hurts, stresses and traumas (the reptilian brain). Thus, we end up creating a time prison for ourselves, reliving the past and blocking our ability to grow, transform and expand into new experiences. During this retrograde cycle, Jupiter is asking us to reflect on our mental patterns and perceptions to ascertain whether they are serving us or not.
One of the ways we do this is by drawing a connection between our thought patterns and emotions. Beginning this cycle in the last decan of Gemini, Jupiter has begun to draw in some of the emotional energy of Cancer into its observations. We then can reflect on how our thoughts are precipitating our emotions. Since emotion is the other piece of the manifestation puzzle – the vibrational resonance which magnetically draws to us the physical match to our frequency signals – it’s crucial to recognize whether our minds are being utilized as a helpful tool to interface with our reality or whether they have taken control of our experiences.
Jupiter is calling on us to examine our patterns to discern whether we are being guided by the wisdom of our hearts or whether we are being misguided by the scattered chaos of our thoughts. We are being given an opportunity (Jupiter) to examine (Gemini) what patterns we may be stuck in and what is or is not working for us. Sometimes we get so attached to ideas, that we never contemplate whether or not those ideas are in alignment with what we know (Sagittarius). In a reality that consists of binary opposites, it’s all too easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and get lost in comparison and polarization.
When we can synthesize the highest expression of both these archetypes – the Thinker and the Knower – we can strike a better balance within ourselves to create greater harmony in our life experiences. We move beyond the simple gathering of information into the grounding of greater wisdom. We do not get lost in the illusion of separation and we do not fail to recognize the Divine spark which animates the mundane. We don’t need labels and categories to understand truth and we don’t need to isolate ourselves on a mountaintop to connect with wisdom.
When we integrate these two energies, we can do away with toxic thinking patterns – and therefore, toxic manifestations. We then transcend the limitations we’ve created for ourselves and open to all new possibilities. When your mind is open, you can create anything; when it’s connected to the wisdom of your heart, what you create will not only benefit you, but everyone.
Through this retrograde of Jupiter, we are beckoned toward the end of a cycle. For the past 12 years (the length of Jupiter’s cycle), we have been working with certain adopted perceptions that were cultivated through past experiences. Now is the time to reexamine those experiences in the context of our current time so we can determine what ideas support our growth and which ones need to be released. As we undergo this process, we are initiated (11 degrees Gemini) into a whole new cycle of higher understanding and deeper wisdom.
My recommendation during this cycle is to not only reflect on your own perceptions and thought patterns, but to pay attention to where those ideas originate. Gemini also has to do with sharing, communication and socialization, while Jupiter is one of our social planets connecting the inner world with societal reality. Thus, we can observe what ideas from our social circles we are replicating in ourselves. It’s common to play the mockingbird game with our modern social media, wherein we spread and share with whatever we engage.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with this. However, we’re being asked to reflect more on what it is we are sharing and if we truly align with the information. Are we looking at this information from a neutral observer position? Or are we approaching it with bias and then spreading the “version” of that information which satisfies our ego? There’s no judgment here, this is something we all do. Which is why it’s important to pause and reflect. If our ideas create reality, which ideas are we choosing to focus on and share with others? When we hear a piece of news or learn new information, from what lens do we perceive it? Is it perpetuating the paradigm of opposition (right vs. wrong, good vs. bad, etc.)? Or is it helping you to better understand the cohesiveness of our seemingly contradictory reality?
If the information you digest is helping you to grow spiritually and fosters a more holistic view of our world, then you have learned to harness the higher expression of Jupiter in Gemini. If, however, what you mentally engage with stimulates negative emotions and antagonistic perceptions of reality, you may be falling into the lower expressions of this energy which can lead to dogmatism and black and white thinking. We gain so much wisdom from our failures and in recognizing our faults, and Jupiter is a much gentler teacher of this than Saturn.
Ultimately, we are each compelled toward growth and expansion. This retrograde offers an opportunity to review how we have been growing and what we are each contributing, in our own way, to the collective. Through this energy, we are graced to discover the synchronization of spirit and matter, mind and heart, thought and intuition; the paradox is resolved. This is the doorway to self-mastery and manifestation of our highest potential. May it serve you well.
Wow. The depth of understanding and crystal clarity of this piece is outstanding.
